What Should I Bring to the Dealership When I’m Ready to Buy or Lease?

Little is more exciting than buying or leasing a new or pre-owned vehicle. You can’t wait to get behind the wheel, try out the exciting features, taste that new freedom and perhaps drive a little more slowly through your neighborhood. But there are a few things you need to do before leaving the dealership that will require you to delay that gratification for a bit. Coming to the dealership prepared, however, can speed up the process and enable you to hit the road sooner rather than later.

1. Your driver's license.

We may have your license on file from an earlier test-drive, but it’s a good idea to bring your driver’s license in so you can more easily fill out the paperwork. Not to mention, you’re going to need it if you plan to drive your new car home.

2. Your Social Security number.

Even if you are not financing your new purchase, we will still need your Social Security Number for tax purposes. Most financial transactions valued at over $10,000 are required to be reported to the IRS. If you have not memorized your number, be sure to bring the card with you or simply write the number down somewhere that can be quickly accessed.

3. Proof of car insurance.

You can't buy a car without proof of car insurance. There are laws in every states requiring drivers to have some type of insurance, as it protects everyone on the road. So be sure to have that handy.

4. Your wallet.

It may seem like a no-brainer, but you will need a check, card, cash or some other form of payment to pay for the vehicle — even if it’s simply a down payment you’re making.

5. Your Financials

Based on your credit rating, you may need to bring proof of employment, residence and salary (your recent pay stub) with you.

6. Your Patience

Purchasing or leasing a new or pre-owned vehicle can be a time-consuming process, especially if you're applying for financing. Plan to give yourself at least a few hours to fill out all of the paperwork.

In addition to the above list, if you’re trading in an old car, you’ll need to bring a trade-in appraisal (you’ll typically have your appraisal performed at the dealership and they can be valid for up to three days) and your old car's title. Once you trade the old car in, you'll have to turn this over because you're changing ownership of the vehicle
